Mazon River Stewardship Initiative
The Mazon River drains 521 square miles of land to the Illinois River.  The watershed encompasses portions of six counties in northcentral Illinois, about 52 miles southwest of Chicago.  This picturesque area is home to 32,000 people.  Large communities like Morris, which sits just outside the basin, provide urban amenities, while many small villages offer a rural lifestyle; Braceville, Braidwood, Campus, Coal City, Diamond, Dwight, East Brooklyn, Gardner, Godley, Mazon, Odell, Reddick, South Wilmington and Verona.  There is an abundance of prime agricultural land and a strong transportation network.  The Mazonia Lakes State Park offers land preservation with hunting and fishing.  Some private clubs offer a relaxing, outdoor setting for local and distant citizens, enjoying lakes remnant of the areas past coal mining industry.  For more information, please visit their website.
